24 of 30: Spring is in the air

24-of-30

Today's high temperatures here is D.C. reminded me that March is almost here and I couldn't be more excited about the fast-approaching arrival of Spring!

outfit-24-of-30

Since I'll technically be able to shop after Wednesday which will be the end of the 30 for 30 for me (though I'm still a few days behind in posting my photos), I can now focus on seeing what gaps I have in my spring wardrobe so that I can fill them.  I have several items I'd like to trade in on my next trip to the Buffalo Exchange and a few gift cards that I received from the Lucky FABB conference and belated graduation gifts (I finished graduate school in December).  So I can finally spend them!  I guess I could have technically spent them during this month since I wouldn't have been spending money, but I decided to take the no shopping part of the 30 for 30 challenge literally and didn't spend my gift cards either.  I have a small stack of March magazines to look through to garner some inspiration for my spring wish list.

What's on your wish list for this spring?

23 of 30: Seeing Red

Excuse the slight frown I have in some of these photos, I was feeling under the weather the day I took them.  To be honest, I was not loving this outfit after I put it together, but didn't have time to rethink it and change before I left the house.

Oh well, every outfit won't be a winner which is why I don't typically take outfit photos on a daily basis, (more like 2 - 3 times a week).  I'm going to shoot for outfit photos 5 days a week once I'm finished with the 30 for 30 this week (yay!), but 7 days is a bit grueling for me personally.

I had to take a moment of silence to mourn the loss of my bracelet on the day I wore this outfit.  It broke as I took it off.  I was so bummed.  It worked so perfectly as a necklace and a bracelet.  I can't remember which Etsy seller I purchased it from, but I will definitely try to track down the seller in hopes of finding a replacement.

22 of 30: Faux Fur, Real Shen

22-of-30

This vest might not be the most practical or office appropriate item I own, but I really like it.  As much as I like the faux fur trend, I couldn't realistically commit a lot of money into other faux fur items when I'd most likely only wear them on the weekends, so this vest was a pain-free compromise.

IMG_1915

I'm all about using clothing as a creative outlet, but for now, living on a budget is a reality, so if I decide to invest in a trend, it will be within my price point.  I'm sure others can relate.

Happy Saturday!

21 of 30: The short of it

    21-of-30

These shorts have proven to be quite the wardrobe workhorse over the past few weeks.  It's funny that I'm getting so much wear out of them in the winter because I rarely wear shorts in the summer. In fact, I only own two pairs of shorts at the moment.  I might make some denim shorts out of an old pair of jeans in case I feel inspired to wear shorts more often when the warm weather arrives.

The season has reached the point for me where I find myself daydreaming about warm weather attire and activities.  Though I've been staying out of stores since the 30 for 30 started because I can't shop, I still get bombarded with Spring fashion in magazines, ads on TV/websites and even my favorite blogs, so I'm sure I'm not the only one that is ready to say goodbye to Winter for a while.

    outfit-21-of-30

On another note, I'm so ready for the weekend to get here, can anyone else relate?  I don't know why this week feels like it's been so long when it was actually shorter because I was off on Monday for President's Day.  Ah well.  Happy Thursday to ya!

20 of 30: Keeping it simple

    20-of-30

I can't believe I only have 10 more days to go to the 30 for 30 challenge!  This month has really flown by.  I'll have to check in on my goals for the year soon to make sure I'm still on track.  I have to make 2011 count!  This outfit was simple and comfortable and my scarf was surprisingly warm.  As much as I love color, it's always nice to take a break from it and go back to a simple color palette.

It's kind of a bummer that these sunglasses are my current favorites because they actually belong to my Mom...

19 of 30: Nice and casual

Though this shirt hasn't made an appearance on the blog (with the exception of posting my 30 for 30 items), it's become a favorite this season.  I don't typically buy flannel, but I love the color yellow, so it won me over.

These pictures were taking before the dusting of snow on Monday night, so they almost look fall-like because the snow that was lingering previously had melted. I am so looking forward to Spring like most people are at this point in the winter.

I rarely take photos in my winter outerwear on this blog because it's really not very exciting.  I wear a black coat on most days with a scarf bundled around my neck and a hat when absolutely necessary.  Don't be fooled by my lack of coat, it was quite cold outside and I ran inside to get warm as soon as these photos were taken.

    18 of 30: Positive Mondays

It's Monday again, so it's time for the next installment of Melissa and Hope's Fabulous in February challenge. Participants are naming three positive things about themselves for each Monday of the month of February.  So here are the three positive things about myself for this week:

    1. I love the fact that once I set me mind to accomplish something, that I usually do it.
    2. I love the fact that I generally have a positive outlook on life.
    3. I love the fact that I'm always passing knowledge and information to family and friends. It's one benefit of loving news, information and social media is that I am always learning something interesting that I can share with others!

Feeling good today, hope you are too!

    Style Profile: Style Pantry

    Photos: Courtesy of Style Pantry

For this edition of Shen Style Profiles, Folake of Style Pantry was kind enough to answer a few questions about her style. Folakes mixes her personal style with posts that feature great insight and perspective fashion, art and design.  So let's get down to the questions!

Shen Dove: What inspired you to start your blog?

Folake: I needed a bucket of some sort to collect the style, creativity and talent I was constantly stumbling across on the internet.

Shen Dove: Where is the strangest place you’ve taken an outfit photo?

Folake: Is that a trick question? Haha. I don't venture out like other bloggers do. I literally just take pics when I'm starting my day in the morning, leaving out with my 3 kids.

Shen Dove: That's understandable. I stick to the same locations for my blog too.

Shen Dove: Do you have a piece of advice you'd like to convey to anyone interested in starting a blog that you wish someone had told you?

Folake: Yes, that be ready for people to pry. Your patience will be tested and you'll receive a hate mail (or more), from that one person that just doesn't like you or what you do.

Shen Dove: How would you describe your personal style? Is it influenced by your career/job?

Folake: My style is mostly credited to the 70s. I describe it has Three's Company meets Woodstock meets Today's fashion :)

Shen Dove: Please name a film, song or piece of artwork that embodies your current personal style. Can you explain your choice?

Folake: Maybe Cleopatra Jones? Seriously any movie from that era that showcased bell bottoms, big hair & big earrings.

Shen Dove: How does the city/town/burb you live in influence your style?

Folake: Well, I live in LA where the sun shines practically all year round. It allows for me to constantly wear caftans, long maxi skirts and dress, and flowy boho tops :)

Shen Dove: What shops/boutiques/websites do you have the most success with finding great things? Do you have an example of a great recent find?

Folake: I shop anywhere. I frequent swap meets, vintage stores, zara, free people, LF, H&M (the list goes on). My most recent and exciting find is OTK boots from LF Stores. They have been on repeat since I purchased them.

Shen Dove: What items are you excited about wearing next season?

Folake: Nothing in particular. I don't get excited about trends. I just have fun wearing beautiful clothes.

Shen Dove: Looking your best doesn't necessarily mean spending your entire paycheck, do you have any tips for shopping on a budget?

Folake: I'm an advocate for smart shopping. I shop bargains. I recommend waiting till end of a particular season before shopping because everything goes on sale and the advantage to waiting is, you are not wearing the pieces you buy when everyone else is doing so.

Shen Dove: Do you have any personal style rules you live by? If so, what are they?

Folake: The bigger the better. Big hair, big accessories, clothes 2 sizes bigger.

Shen Dove: Thanks for answering my questions Folake!

Be sure to check out Style Pantry if you aren't already!

Sometimes you should be careful what you wish for...the unseasonably high temperatures of Friday have dipped drastically and I almost blew away from the wind today (okay I'm exaggerating a bit).  I guess spring will take a while longer to arrive to the Mid-Atlantic region.

    14 of 30: Red Accents

    14 of 30

So this is what I ended up wearing on Valentine's Day.  I had planned to wear the red skirt that is one of my 30 for 30 items because it seemed festive, but completely changed my mind when I woke up that morning.  This is why the whole outfit planning thing the night before doesn't really work for me every day.  No matter how carefully I plan an outfit the night before, I usually change my mind by the next day.

Sorren of Classic Noise was kind enough to give me the stylish and versatile blogger awards recently.  I really appreciate the awards, thanks a bunch Sorren!

So I'll share 7 facts about myself:

    1. I read 70 something books in 2010... what can I say, I’m a super fast reader and ride public transportation daily. I read books in every genre from biographies to young adult, NYT bestsellers, to award winning literature and to mysteries, to self-help/development, to books by my favorite marketing guru, to chick lit. I didn’t really have a set goal other than writing down each book I finished in it's entirety. I only purchase a small fraction of the books I read and I make good use of my local library. For this reason, I’m wary of purchasing any sort of book reader though I love the look and portability of iPads.
    2. I’ve never had any chemicals in my hair (perms or dye). People assume that I’ve recently ‘gone natural’ because I haven’t had my hair straightened in quite a while but that’s not the case.
    3. As an only child, I went through a phase when I was a quite young where I wanted not only a sibling, but a twin! My poor mother had to explain to me that the whole twin thing was impossible…bummer.
    4. I really suspect sometimes that I am a granny inside a twenty-something body. Now that I’ve discovered that, I’m starting to look forward to birthdays after years of getting morose about them because I feel like I’m getting closer to my ‘true age.’ There's nothing to fear about getting older as long as I can be a fly granny one day : )
    5. I think I am at my funniest when I am not actually trying to be funny.  The jokes and comments I make that get the most chuckles and laughs are usually the one's that I didn't really intend to be funny. But I do enjoy making friends and family laugh with my accidental humor.
    6. I don't listen to local radio stations much anymore. If I weren't around other people that listened to the radio, I could literally go days without listening to anything but songs in my iTunes.  I also don't watch music videos much anymore. I wouldn't know what was going on in the music world if it wasn't for Twitter.
    7. I read the wedding announcements in the New York Times every Sunday : )
There you have it friends!  So now, I'll nominate 7 great bloggers: Alterations Needed, The Auspicious LifeDash Dot Dotty, Delayed Missives, My Fashion Epiphany, The Feisty House, and Streets and Stripes

    Happy Wednesday!

    13 of 30: Flared

    13-of-30

I usually leave flared jeans to taller, leggier gals, but I couldn't resist these jeans when I saw them in the Gap while spending a Groupon late last year. I rarely get Groupon's not because I don't think they are great but because unless you were planning to purchase an item, you're just likely to spend more money than you planned when you go to the store to redeem the Groupon. Or maybe other people have better willpower than me and don't experience that...

    outfit-13-of-30-deets

For the past two seasons, when I have worn jeans, they have usually been of the skinny (jegging) variety, but I added this pair to my 30 for 30 items to encourage myself to venture beyond the skinny silhouette. These jeans won't work in snowy weather because they are so long, so hopefully we're done with the snow for the season.

    IMG_1833

Flared, skinny or bootcut are about as risky as I get with my denim choices.  Because of my size/proportions, "boyfriend" cut jeans just look sloppy (and not in a good way) on me.  Figure hugging denim is my personal preference.
So what's your denim preference for next season? Skinny? Flare? Bootcut? "Boyfriend"? Do tell!

Fashion Week: Duro Olowu Fall 2011 RTW

I know many of you fashion enthusiasts are following the coverage of New York Fashion Week, but I couldn't resist sharing some of the collection of one of my favorite designers, Duro Olowu.  All of his pieces both clash and yet fit together at the same time in a really organic way.  His collection makes me want to pack my bag and take a trip to Africa or Mexico (two places that inspire his work).  Who am I kidding, I don't need an excuse to take an international trip : )

Fall 2011 RTW - Duro Olowu

In a description of the collection on Style.com, Olowu stated that, "My clothes are about joy."  Well definitely agree with his statement, I feel joyful just looking at his beautiful clothing.

    12 of 30: Happy Valentine's Day!

Happy Valentine's Day friends!  I hope you gave and showed love and positivity with your loved ones and others around you today.

    12-of-30

It's Monday again, so it's time to participate in Melissa and Hope's Fabulous in February Challenge which calls for participants to share three positive things about themselves on each Monday of the month of February.  I think this challenge is a great exercise in celebrating the positive things about ourselves.  So here is my list!

    1. I'm great at developing ideas/solving problems.  Whether I am completing a task at work or trying to help a friend, I love to use my imagination to create ideas/solve problems or put a new spin on an existing idea.
    2. I'm really good at building outfits with existing items in my closet.  My wardrobe isn't excessively large (in my opinion) and my wallet is not bottom-less, so this skill serves me well.  I love participating in Kendi's 30 for 30 because it forces me to flex my 'remixing muscles'  and not rely on new purchases to create outfits that I enjoy wearing.
    3. I'm excellent at explaining/describing movie and book plots to people.  Kind of random, but if I've seen a movie or read a book, I can summarize it for you in great (but not excessive) detail.  This hasn't proven to be a marketable skill for me so far, but you never know...

    12-of-30-deets

On another note, I am a few days behind in posting outfits, so this is not actually what I'm wearing today, but I did have red accents in my outfit in honor of Valentine's Day, you'll see a little later this week.  Well that's all for now! Happy Monday!

    11 of 30: Sparkly Teal

    11-of-30

I know this has nothing to do with my outfit, but one day, I'm going to write a whole book about the conversations I overhear on my daily travels on public transportation. On Friday when I wore this outfit, I was on the subway and overheard a group of teens talk about how indignant they are when they have to relinquish their seats to elderly and handicapped people on the train or bus...smh. I felt a strong desire to lecture them, but they were considerably bigger than me so I just left it alone...lol. I've learned over the years that sometimes well intentioned advice is not well received. I really that hope age and experience makes those teens kinder to their elders and the less fortunate.

    11-of-30-outfit

But on a more positive note, I meet kind people of all ages on a regular basis in real life and through blogging and other forms of social media. Actually, a day later, I was on another public transportation vehicle and several people willingly gave up their seats to elderly riders. That really raised my spirits. I hope that when I'm a little old lady, people will be kind enough to give up their seat if I'm in need of one.

    Well that's all for now.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

On Thursday I made another trip to NYC to attend the Independent Fashion Bloggers Evolving Influence Conference. The conference was great! I met some great bloggers I recognized and some pretty cool one's I wasn't familiar with. The panelists and speakers offered a wealth of information. The panel moderators were just as informative as the panelists! I literally have pages of notes from the speakers!

I have to say the highlight of the day for me was hearing the designers of Proenza Schouler, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez speak about how they research inspiration for their collections, the rising influence of bloggers in the fashion sphere and how they use technology and social media in their business. Good stuff!

I highly suggest that you view the whole livestream if you weren't able to attend. I was a bit bummed that I wasn't able to stay over for the second day of workshops, I was so looking forward to hearing what Gala Darling had to say! But I am happy that I was able to attend the conference overall, it was worth the trip. I feel grateful that I live close enough to NYC that a day trip is possible.

Mai Le of Fashionist was kind enough to take my photos in the cold on Thursday morning. As you can tell from the second photo, it was pretty windy (and cold) that day.

My outfit was a combination of some of my favorite items that I chose for the 30 for 30. As much as I love this skirt, seeing how it flew up in the wind on Thursday makes me wonder if I'll actually wear it without tights when the warmer weather arrives...

I've been so busy this week that my Friend Friday post along with the others I had planned to do just didn't happen, but I'll get back on track next week.

    Have a lovely weekend!

Nine days in and I'm still feeling pretty good about my items for the 30 for 30. But there are many sales going on these days; the proof is in the massive amounts of sale emails I've been getting lately from stores I've shopped at in the past because I've been taking the precaution of staying away from actual stores to avoid temptation.

I wish I had more to say today, but I don't. I'm honestly looking forward to the arrival of the weekend so I can recharge.

Yesterday, I attended the Lucky Fashion and Beauty Blogger Conference in New York City. I really enjoyed the speakers and panel discussions. They were very insightful. It was also fun to be around a whole room full of people whose interest in fashion and beauty matched my own. I won't do a full recap, because I don't want to spoil it for those who still plan to watch the conference recording. Many of the conference speakers touched in some way on being authentic as a blogger, remaining true to yourself and continuing to learn/expand your knowledge (about the craft of blogging, about blogging platforms, social media and technology, etc.). Joan Rivers was as funny as she is on TV, but she also gave great advice like her opinion that that the only things you'll regret in life are the things you don't do and to manage your own money, be a business woman instead of relying on others to do so for you. Jenna Lyons (of J Crew) looked as stylish in real life as she does in photos. I also learned about great sites that I will check out when I have time such as Style Trek and Fashism.

I wasn't very good at documenting the day in pictures (this is still something I need to work on!), I was too busy taking everything in. But I did get photos done by the photographer they had set up at the event which are way better than my usual self-taken photos. I feel grateful that I had the opportunity to participate in the conference and thought Lucky did an awesome job at putting together a great conference.
